How to lose friends and ....

Ah, don't you just love the awkward silence in a conversation when you know that the other person is thinking something along the lines of 'God, would she just shut up already about the travelling and the sun, pretentious or what!'

This is usually after the other person asked how I'm settling in back here. And I know they're not really interested, but it's too easy to bite the bait and 20 minutes later I'm still talking...

These are some of the thing I've said in the last 6 months that should have stayed safe in my head:

No, I don't drive yet - I used to live in countries with public transport systems
You've been here 5 years, really? why?
Do we have to talk about kitchens, again?
Well, I don't know how anyone could stay in one place for years..
I'm wearing thermals under my jeans
All references to past birthday and Christmas celebrations which include words like sun, warm, happy
Beach? This isn't a beach! ( Note - Sandymount of the permanent low tide, not the west)
But why don't Irish people do X like they do in ......... , it's so much easier
Well, you guys voted those jokers in, not me
Oh, you should go there , you'd love it ( plus extremely detailed explanation)
Try this, it's not spicy at all
Mmm, this time last year I was....

Have you put your foot in it recently?

Don't forget to check back Friday for a guest post from Sirmelja

Hah! This is why I LOVE people who ask me questions about growing up overseas and are genuinely interested in my answers. Then it all comes flooding out and I'm SO thankful for the chance to talk about things that the vast majority of people simply can't relate to and sometimes find offensive or bothersome.

For me it was Independance Day. I keep having to bite my tongue and be respectful, while in my head I have so many snarky sarcastic comments about ignorant American patriotism. Oops, did I just write that in public? ;)

Yes you did! Oops, you might get thrown out now!

It is great when you meet people who're interested, and I mean I'm fascinated by other people's lives so for me it's a swapping thing. but unfortunately a lot of people just aren't interested in what lies outside their own box. This is probably why I write too - it's a great excuse to talk to people and ask them about their lives!
Plus I don't see what's wrong in seeing the bad as well as the good in a place, nowhere is perfect so why pretend it is?
